Women’s Basketball Attendance Boom due to Social Media Stars Athletes (2024-2025)

2024 marked the WNBA’s strongest regular-season attendance year since 1998, with the average attendance rising 48.0% year over year to 9,807.

The league’s attendance trend shows a long-term recovery growth rather than a one-year blip. After falling to 2,620 fans per game in 2021. The league rebounded with 1.2 million total attendees the next year. This pattern suggests the league is not just getting back to the pre-COVID baseline but growing beyond that.

The Detroit Shock has the most overall attendance out of any team. This was a time during the first peak for the WNBA. They also had a number of playoff appearances that drive their total attendance up. Detroit is also known for its strong fandom for all its sports. These factors explain why the Detroit Shock have the highest attendance.

In recent years the star power coming into the WNBA is undeniable. This has dramatically increased visibility, attendance, and overall interest in the league. This new generation of athletes have brought lifelong fans and new audiences making record breaking growth. Combined with the increased media coverage and marketing around these athletes, the WNBA is experiencing one of the largest growth periods in its history.

Stars Like Paige Bueckers Drive Attendance

Paige Bueckers is one of the most influential faces in women’s basketball. She gained national attention as the No. 1 recruit in her class out of high school. She quickly lived up to the hype in her freshman year at the University of Connecticut; her freshman year was 2020-2021. She became the first freshman ever to win the Naismith College Player of the year, averaging over 20 points a game, and leading UCon to the Final Four. Her leadership, athletic ability, and composers made her a instant star and a household name.

Bueckers’ college story is defined by resilience, after one of the best freshman seasons, she faced multiple challenges that lead to her having a season ending injury in 2022. Even with these setbacks she remained a large presence in the sport through media coverage, NIL deals, and fan engagement. Her comeback to the court went better than anyone could have wanted. In her first game back, she had 8 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 1 steal. She showcased her elite skills, but also her perseverance. This strengthened her personal brand and deepening fan investment for her. This comeback from adversity is a key factor in her popularity and why she became one of the largest NIL athletes.

Paige Buecker's individual success has pipelined into the growth of the WNBA. As one of the most successful and wide followed athletes in the NIL era she has helped grow television rating, social media engagement, and attendance at women’s games.  Her star power and other athletes coming from this NIL era, has expanded the audience of women’s basketball. Just Women's Sports point to players like Bueckers as key contributors to the surge in viewership and fan interest.  higher than in other games. This increase aligns with the star power and media-fueled rivalry between the two stars.

Larger Venues Show Untapped Ticket Demand

Different venues attendance

Larger venues consistently show hidden demand for ticket sales. They can draw roughly up to five times more fans if they moved games to a bigger building.  If the WNBA moved all games to bigger venues, they could increase ticket sales. The 15 WNBA games that were moved to larger venues accommodated a high ticket demand of 236,670. This helped the league have a record breaking pay day of 3.15 million.  Smaller arenas can not accommodate the demand that the WNBA now has. Moving games into a bigger space will increase the game-day experiences and make the event feel more high-profile.

This shift not only increases ticket sells but will also create a more electric and high energy atmosphere. As stars pull in bigger audiences and teams begin shift to larger venues, they are filling the seats proving they belong there. They would of sold out smaller arenas leaving thousands of fans disappointed and not able to see their favorite players.

The WNBA's growth is undeniable with league attendance growing 48%, over a million views of T.V., and merchandise sells growing over a 600% increase. According to Sarah Levitt, some of these factors like star power, a new digital era, investment in the game, and an overall cultural shift to support women sports are causing an increase in league-wide momentum, capacity decisions, and schedule placement. The strongest The strongest business opportunities appear where teams can identify high-interest games early and align larger venues, weekend windows, and premium pricing around them.
